Glad...Totally see what you're saying Charlie.

Glad to hear that PA seems to be more on the up-and-up with their contracts. (In the past, some authors were blindsided by having to pay and/or getting promotional promises that weren't delivered.)

I've seen several agent blogs who consider PA no better than self-publishing and that authors are better off not mentioning a credit there.

But you're right that it's inaccurate use a broad brush on any group: I'm sure there are great PA books, just like there are great self-published books.

Best of luck with your work--and really, I appreciate your comments!Annette Lyonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12493583432919249814noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29222764.post-4376913186902493862010-12-14T23:20:19.882-07:002010-12-14T23:20:19.882-07:00Annette,

I believe that along with all the poorly written, never should have been accepted mss, some really great, well written, stories have been published by this publisher. Three come to mind that I've read which are good enough to have been accepted by any publisher in the country publishing in the respective genre. You are right, of course, about sells. Mine are low. My understanding is that the highest selling PA author has sold appox. 6000 copies. So, not too many.
I realize PA has flaws. People can find something to complain about most anything. My previous comment wasn't meant as a defense of PA. One thing that is mentioned a lot, although you didn't in this blog, is that authors who have been published by PA are stupid and have no right calling themselves authors. I don't consider myself stupid and those remarks hit close to home and they hurt. I guess I just sometimes feel obligated to defend myself.
I apologize because this is not meant to detract from the purpose of your blog.Charlie Moorehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15383217084337552494noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29222764.post-23831037597071976562010-12-14T10:00:22.653-07:002010-12-14T10:00:22.653-07:00Charlie,

I know plenty of others who have not--including having to pay for getting their book published.

One reason they aren't respected in publishing is that they'll take almost anything--they don't have much of an acceptance/rejection system, especially with authors they expect money from.

They also have very little distribution power. I'd be interested to know what your sales numbers have been like. I don't know of a single PA author who has sales in the thousands.Annette Lyonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12493583432919249814noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29222764.post-32040866594128169012010-12-13T21:26:49.817-07:002010-12-13T21:26:49.817-07:00I wish I would have had this post when I first sta...I wish I would have had this post when I first started out. I have a great respect for you (yeah, I ...Annette,

I have a great respect for you (yeah, I know we've haven't met, but I think in this cyber world it's allowed.) You obviously know your craft. I just finished Spires of Stone and even though I don't normally read romance I read this and enjoyed it. I cried at the epilogue reunion.

However, I wouldn't believe everything Predators and Editors says. My book, Andrea's Dream, is published by PublishAmerica and the only complaint I have is they priced it higher than I think they should have. I paid them no money to publish the book nor did they ask for any. They even edited the ms for me. That may not have been the best of quality editing, but they did offer it. Now, I know the majority of the publishing world has a bias against this company and for reasons of my own I will probably not seek their services again, but for the book they did publish for me I am 99% happy.
Oh, and I'm not the best promoter but I do have a entry in ldspublisher's Christmas story contest.

CharlieCharlie Moorehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15383217084337552494noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29222764.post-48923502990963066572010-12-13T17:40:58.150-07:002010-12-13T17:40:58.150-07:00Interesting, Annette!
